Information Package for Elk Permit Applicants

Requirements

Hunters will need to prepare themselves for their hunt by reviewing the following information:

  • All elk hunters require a permit.
  • All elk hunters must purchase a hunt seal. The fee is $50.00.
  • A bag limit of one elk per hunter per licence year applies in all areas where elk hunting is permitted.
  • Written permission from the First Nation is required to hunt elk on Category A and B Settlement Lands.
  • All elk hunters require permission to hunt within 1 km of a residence, whether occupants are present or not.

Permit Areas

The elk hunt has been divided into two types of permit areas:

(1) Permit Hunt Authorization (PHA) Areas - Elk are likely to be seen more frequently in these areas

  • A limited number of elk hunt permits will be issued through a PHA draw. Successful applicants will also be issued a Wildlife Act permit to hunt elk in the Elk Exclusion Area.
  • Forty elk permits will be issued to hunters participating in this draw:
    • 4 permits for the Braeburn Herd
    • 36 permits for the Takhini Herd
  • The traditional range of the Takhini and Braeburn herds is further divided into Core and Buffer areas (see Permit Hunt Data Sheet and Map icon image - this is a pdf file 2,188 KB). Hunters will need to decide which herd they want to hunt, what area, and if they wish to take a bull or a cow.
  • Season Dates:
    • Buffer Area - September 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010
    • Core Area - September 15, 2009 to October 15, 2009
  • The PHA application fee is $10.00 + GST. Joint permit application fee is $20 + GST. No permit returns allowed on this draw. Application fees are non-refundable.

(2) Elk Exclusion Area  - Elk are likely to be seen less frequently in these areas

  • This area is open to hunting elk using a Wildlife Act permit. Permits are available upon request at any Environment Yukon office at no charge.
  • Season Dates: September 1st, 2009 through March 31, 2010
  • This includes all areas open to hunting outside the Permit Hunt Authorization areas, except Game Management Zones 10 and 11.

Permit Conditions

  • Hides will be de-haired and returned to hunter at a later date, if requested
