Environment Yukon is planning the following steps to manage the winter tick in Yukon’s wild elk herds:
Over the winter, department officials will continue to consult with experts about management options and the information needed for an effective risk assessment. Best efforts will be made to gather the information needed for the assessment.
Letters have been sent to affected First Nations formally notifying them of the issue, offering to provide them with a technical briefing and inviting them to take part in a risk assessment and planning workshop later this winter.
The department will also contact First Nations, non-government organizations and individuals with an interest in elk management to establish a cooperative working group to deal with the issue.
A risk assessment and planning workshop will be organized for later this winter for affected First Nations, working group members, tick experts and epidemiologists. Part of the effort at the workshop will be to start work on a long term tick management plan.
In the interim we will use medicated feed this winter to reduce the risk of ticks spreading from elk to other native wildlife. This is planned for February to March when most ticks are feeding and are most susceptible. Details on how the medicated feed will be provided to the elk will be worked out by the department and its partners in the immediate future.
