Special Celebrations
These are few of the annual special events in which our department takes an active role:
YBAM - Yukon Biodiversity Awareness Month (April)
Preserving biodiversity is one of the most critical issues of our time … and Yukoners can play a part! YBAM brings many celebrations, including Earth Day (April 22) under one umbrella. Do some activities from the Backyard Biodiversity and Beyond learning resource and celebrate life!
National Wildlife Week (mid-April)
For the last decade, the department has sent out National Wildlife Week (NWW) posters and teacher's kits to schools. Special events and talks are often planned. The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is the lead agency in Canada for National Wildlife Week.
Celebration of Swans (mid- to late-April)
It just gets bigger and better every year! And the swans keep coming back! Our Wildlife Viewing staff offer interpretive events and school activities at the Swan Haven Interpretation Centre south of Whitehorse. Book early for your class!
Earth Day (April 22)
Faro's Crane and Sheep Viewing festival (mid-May)
Behold the migration of ¼ million Sandhill Cranes over the Tintina Trench and view unique Fannin Sheep, a colour phase of Dall (Thinhorn) Sheep. This yearly festival includes free bird, plant and sheep viewing tours, presentations, a community barbeque, entertainment and much more!
Oceans Day (June)
Celebrate the world's oceans and the end of the school year at the same time! If you are interested, there are teacher's kits and posters available.
Weekend on the Wing (mid-June)
Welcome the return of northern and alpine bird specialties by joining free interpreted walks and talks at Tombstone Park. This is also an excellent time to view a plethora of alpine flowers, some unique to this region.
Wildlife Viewing Special Events (year-round)
Walks, talks, and guided trips on various wildlife and environmental talks are coordinated under this program. A calendar of events comes out on a regular basis during these months.
